Leaky Gut and Drinking Alcohol (with Replacements)

In August I turned 21. As any 21 year old, I wanted to try drinking a little. Not too much, though. Just to see how it feels, and try the taste. I’ve never seen the appeal in getting drunk. To be honest, there’s nothing really special about alcohol. The taste of the different drinks is nice. Well, all of two(?) that I’ve tried. Wine and Margaritas are the only drinks I’ve tried. I like the liminess of the Margaritas, and I’m not really sure what I like about the wine. Just the fact that I can drink it, now? I don’t know, but I’m done with my 21st year rebellion, if that’s what you can even call it, and I’ll tell you why.

Alcohol and the Gut

Alcohol is harmful to all organs in your body, but I’ll focus on the intestines, right now. In your gut, there are hormonal substances called prostaglandins. These substances moderate inflammation. Drinking alcohol suppresses the production of prostaglandins. Without these, more inflammation is likely to happen inside the gut, and cause damage in the form of intestinal permeability (leaky gut).

What is Leaky Gut?

Intestinal Hyperpermeability (AKA Leaky Gut), is when you have little holes in your intestines that make you have food sensitivities. The most common food sensitivities caused by leaky gut are: gluten, soy, and peanuts. No one is supposed to be sensitive to these foods, but because leaky gut is so common, a lot of people are.

In most cases, people who have leaky gut will feel bloated, have diarrhea, and skin problems (e.g. eczema, rough skin, acne, etc.).

Do YOU Have Leaky Gut?

You probably do. Most people do. There are many different causes, not just alcohol. So, even if you don’t drink, you may have it.

Healing Leaky Gut While Vegan!

Do you have Leaky Gut, and want to heal? You definitely can! I have a personalized program for Healing Leaky Gut While Vegan, and am creating a Vegan “Bone Broth” Powder you can add to smoothies and soups. Replacements for Alcoholic Drinks

There are many ways to get around drinking alcohol while feeling like you are. On the website Viva La Vegan! there are recipes for mocktails. you can see them here.

Another great replacement for alcohol, is Kombucha. A friend of mine says that he gets a buzz from drinking Kombucha, so if you want something like that, at least drink something good for your gut. I recommend GT’s Synergy Kombuchas!
